Tino Ojala is a Finnish wrestler who achieved a significant victory in March 2023 by winning the European Under-23 Championship in the 63 kg category in Bucharest.
This championship was particularly significant as Tino was only 21 years old at the time, so he still has the opportunity to compete in the same age group at future European Championships.
In late 2023, the Finnish Wrestling Federation selected Tino Ojala as the Young Wrestler of the Year in recognition of his achievements. Tino has also been selected as the Helsinki Young Athlete of the Year.
Ojala represents Helsinki Haka and, despite his young age, has shown exceptional talent and determination in his wrestling career.
Successful and determined wrestler Tino Ojala answered our questions about sports, well-being and his goals.
How did your athletic journey begin, and how did you end up in wrestling?
My athletic journey began at the age of 6 with taekwondo. However, after a year of training, I switched to wrestling, following in my older brother's footsteps.
What are your biggest achievements so far, and what are your goals for the coming years?
My biggest achievements in wrestling are the European Under-23 Championship and three Finnish Men's Championships. My future goals are to win a men's medal, and the long-term goal is the 2028 Olympics.
What does holistic well-being mean to you as an athlete?
To me, holistic well-being means that the basics are in order and I can devote all my time to sports without having to think about other areas.
What is your typical training day like?
My typical training day usually consists of one sport-specific exercise and one ancillary exercise. The ancillary exercises generally focus on basic endurance, strength, speed, or a sports-specific circuit.
How does your diet support a wrestler's performance and recovery?
A varied diet supports my performance and recovery.
What are the most important things for recovery after intense training?
The most important things for recovery are a varied diet and sufficient rest.
Do you have any favorite supplements that you find particularly helpful?
Protein supplements and magnesium can be beneficial for recovery, and omega-3 fatty acids support overall well-being.
What is your motivational quote or life advice that helps you move forward?
My motivational phrase is "Life, nothing more," meaning that you should have a sense of humor and enjoy life.
